Health & Wellness

Today I decided to go for a hike.  It’s been beautiful all day, and the sun has been shining bright, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity.  This marks the beginning of my health and fitness adventure, and I am excited to share it with you!
If you aren’t already aware, I chose hiking because I am a wildland firefighter.  This entails a lot of hiking, which I can do, but I want to be enjoying that part rather than only enduring it.  Hiking is also very great exercise, and it isn’t as mundane as running around a track. I want to be a smoke-jumper (you can read about that in my previous post “I Must Begin Somewhere”) and the requirements are quite intense!  Besides all of that, I love the outdoors and I love to hike!  So I went with a good friend of mine to Battle Creek Canyon.  We hiked up to the waterfall there and it was beautiful!  The journey was quite taxing, as I haven’t been exercising regularly, but I survived!
I downloaded the Endomondo application onto my phone for easy tracking of my workouts.  It’s a great app and is perfect for what I am trying to accomplish!  I recommend downloading it for yourself so you can easily keep track of your own progress!  The following are my results for today:

Not bad for a Monday, right?!  I am going to wake up early every day this week and continue my new found hiking routine, while keeping you updated in the process!  I can’t wait for us to share progress reports.

I am about to share with you my favorite dish on planet Earth.  This recipe was handed down to me from a good friend of mine, who is all about health and fitness.  I recommend eating this every morning, or at least until you get sick of it, which you won’t!

  1. Go to your local health food store and find any kind of whole grain, dark bread that tickles your fancy
  2. Pick out a few ripe avocados, but not so many that they all go bad before you use them
  3. Grab a carton of large, brown eggs
  4. Don’t forget the fresh spinach!

Don’t give up on me yet, you won’t be disappointed!

First, cut up and smash your avocado.  You will be using it as a spread, so that should give you an idea of the consistency you are looking for.  Get some water boiling, as you will be boiling your egg.  Wait until it comes to a rolling boil and drop in an egg.  Then, toast your piece of delicious whole grain bread to your liking.  I personally don’t like it extremely toasted, but that’s just me.  I usually boil my egg for about two minutes, and then I throw in a handful of fresh spinach and cook it alongside the egg for two more minutes.  Now, I like my egg to have somewhat of a runny yolk as opposed to hard-boiled, but this is entirely up to you how cooked you would like it.  Also, the cooking time may need to be increased or decreased as per your elevation.

After your two minutes have passed, retrieve your eggs, spinach, and toast and spread your avocado all over it, as if it were butter.  Don’t be afraid to indulge, avocados are a super food after all!  I then drain my spinach and place it on top of the avocado spread.  Then I remove the shell from my boiled egg and break it in half.  It should be pliable enough to use your hands, unless it is hard-boiled.  Throw that egg on top of the spinach, and voila!  It’s a masterpiece of brilliant deliciousness, and it’s actually very good for you (you won’t be able to tell though with how fantastic it tastes).  It is also great to eat right after your morning workout, as it will give you nearly an entire day’s worth of energy.

P.S.  Don’t forget to share your experience with the rest of us foodies!  Pictures welcome.

I have been thinking a lot these past few days about how I would start this blog.  It seems like I created it with these incredible, massive plans, and they somehow slipped away!  After pondering for a while, I just decided to sit in front of the computer and simply type.  I suppose this can be called Day One….

As you may or may not be aware, I am a firefighter.  I love what I do dearly and I wouldn’t give it up for the world!  With that being said, it is pretty hard work for the most part.  My pager can go off at any time, day or night and I could be gone for unknown periods of time.

During this unknown amount of leave I take from my comfortable intelli-gel bed, I hike.  I sleep, I hike.  I eat, I hike.  I wield tools, I dig.  It was very hard to get used to the rough terrain, the intense weight on my back and waist, and the heat.  But it is now my passion.

I am going to publicly announce my goal here today!  I have recently gained some extra pounds, of which I want no part of anymore.  So, my goal weight is 120.  I haven’t weighed myself today, but I assume I’m around 145, which is well above my healthy weight as I am only 5′ 2″.  I have chosen the goal weight of 120 pounds for one reason, and one reason alone.  My own perception of my body is skewed and fluctuates between love and hate.  I’m used to that, as I have struggled with my weight and eating habits my whole life.  This is not the reason I’m doing it people!  To want to be thin isn’t enough, at least not for me.

My passion and love for helping others has led me on this path of wildland firefighting (you will hear a lot about this as we take our journey together).  I want to be what’s called a “smoke jumper” within the next year, ideally before the next wildland season!  If you don’t know what that is, google it and find out.  So, this is the beginning of this particular story.  I hope you come back often and share with me your experiences as well!

P.S.  Where is your favorite place to take a hike?  Do you have any pictures to share?
